The look of military boots has risen in popularity the last several years -- especially among young people. They are quite functional in a way, and there are even some magazines coming out that are dedicated solely to this new fashion trend. This type of footwear has its origins dating all the way to the time of Rome, when soldiers in the army donned boots for battle.
Designers have made many adaptations specifically for use in prohibitive weather conditions, and other types of problems that may have arisen. The standard model is a lace up the front design, although other variations are now being seen. However, the first one still retains the title of being the most popular. Another model that has found favor is the jump boots, worn by paratroopers. Other specialty models include those that were created for special terrain. These include boots for soldiers who had to fight in the jungle, or those adapting to battles in the desert. Obviously these have a unique look, and are constructed to protect a soldier's feet.
Since many of the areas that the army goes into are typically considered "wet", the boots were made to be waterproof, providing protection from foot diseases. Even with that feature, there is still the proper amount of air flow built in, so the foot can breathe. Chemists have come up with new materials, or adapted old ones with special treatments to be able to withstand a variety of conditions. All of these military boots come with the proper ankle support necessary for combat areas. Many also have the well known Gore-Tex feature, which aids significantly in the waterproofing area. If the basic model is "dressed up" a bit, there is the possibility of creating a whole new look.
Military boots are designed first and foremost for protection, not fashion. They will not do some of the things that regular designer long boots will. Anybody seeking to radically re-design his/her new boots had better rethink this process. If that is the primary reason for purchasing a pair of these boots, it might not be the wisest investment.
An army surplus or supply store might be the best starting point for many people. With the great variety and number of different styles available there, it is easy to find something that will be the right fit. When accessorized with the proper top and/or bottom, these can make a great fashion statement. Military boots will simply complete the look of the ensemble and that is typically what is most important anyway.
Sometimes it is easy just to copy what a few of the trendier fashion plates are wearing and give it a unique twist. Anybody in the music world may also be on the cutting edge, so military boots might be a good start there as well. For the novice, this type of footwear provides great protection and can be used to start a new line of fashion.
Military boots are not just for the army any more.
