Originally designed for U.S. soldiers in the Panama Experimental Platoon, the first jungle boots were manufactured in cooperation with the U.S. Rubber Company as durable, lightweight footwear for use in hot tropical climates. Traditional boot materials became stiff or rotted in the wet, humid conditions and provided little traction in mud and mire. A soldier in the U.S. Army, Sergeant Raymond Dobie, devised the ingenious Panama sole that is still used in some jungle boots today; it incorporated angled rubber cleats that helped provide additional traction in mud and sludge, making jungle boots the military boot of choice in dense tropical environments.
Jungle boots with the Panama sole were not mass-produced for military use until the late 1960s, when they were standard military issue for soldiers in Vietnam. The rubber soles were highly durable in the humid Vietnamese climate, but provided little protection against puncture damage; as a result, many jungle boots were reinforced with a steel plate under the insole to protect feet from injury. The removable insoles were well ventilated and helped to keep feet cool, and water vents allowed moisture to flow out of the jungle boots, keeping feet as dry as possible in the wet, marshy conditions. Jungle boots of the Vietnam era were also upgraded to full nylon uppers rather than the cotton fabric used previously; nylon was both lighter in weight and more durable in the wet conditions of the jungle, making it a wiser choice for soldiers in that environment.
Today, jungle boots are used by firefighters, first responders, and other individuals who must work in wet, boggy conditions. While jungle boots are not usually worn by U.S. military personnel as part of the regular uniform, military forces in other parts of the world often incorporate jungle boots into their official uniforms, and the U.S. Marine Corps still allows the use of updated jungle boots for soldiers on duty. Jungle boots and other tactical boots offer unique advantages and benefits including waterproof construction, nonslip soles, and cool, comfortable materials. Tactical Boot Store offers the widest selection of high-quality jungle boots for their customers, and each pair of jungle boots they sell comes with exceptional customer service and the Tactical Boot Store reputation for quality.
