Tracing the history of serving and protecting a particular society is an interesting exercise as well as a lesson in detective work. The Greeks used slaves to keep law and order during public meetings. This crowd controlling group wore sandals to perform their duties so some historians say that modern day police shoes are an offspring of gladiator sandals.
The Romans used the army to keep the peace, but right before the fall of the Roman Empire a group of citizens called Vigiles guarded citizens by serving as night watchman. Modern police keeping forces began to emerge in different European countries during the 18th century and each one had they own method of keeping the peace. Constables were used in the United Kingdom and the first uniformed police unit in France were called “sergents de ville” or “city sergeants.”
In the United States the first city police unit was established in Philadelphia in 1751. The Secret Service was organized in 1865 and it was the main investigating force used by the US Government. After the Civil War policing took on para-military persona when police uniforms and police shoes were worn to perform protection duties.
Immediately after the war policing the wild frontier of the American West was the responsibility of the Army, but the Pinkerton National Detective Agency was used to control some of the violence in the small towns. Pinkerton agents were so popular in the late 19th century they out numbered army personnel. Uniformed Pinkerton agents were hired by businesses and individuals as well as by the government.
The old days of policing in street clothes and regular footwear are long gone. In order for police departments to perform all the tasks needed to control the behavior of modern day society they must be equipped with state-of-the-art uniforms and rugged footwear which most officers call the protective police shoes for 21st century tactical peacekeeping.
The old lace up plain toe black oxford police shoe has taken its rightful place as an officer’s dress shoe; the tactical boot has become the workhorse of police departments around the country. Police shoes are now the Bates 8” Defender as well as the Enforcer or Rocky’s 8” steel toe zipper boot. Converse makes a lace up and a side zipper police safety toe and waterproof boot as well as a police cross-trainer. Who would have thought that a distant grandson of the sandal would become law enforcement’s new best friend.
