A frequently overlooked part of a policeman’s uniform are his shoes. Police shoes must serve several roles, the most important of which is being comfortable. Comfort, appearance, durability and cost are all factors when selecting police shoes.
Comfort is vital. When deciding what police shoes to purchase, the type of shoe is very important. If the officer will be working outdoors, or in a rural environment, a full-length or quarter boot is preferred. The footwear needs to withstand the weather and terrain the officer will encounter. If the environment is cool and wet, Goretex material is a must to wick away the moisture to ensure dryness of the feet. The police shoes must also have flexible soles. Police officers spend much of their time standing, so it is imperative they have a comfortable platform to work from.
Along with comfort, appearance is a very important aspect. A policeman must have neat and polished police shoes in order to present a professional appearance. Most of the police shoes on the market are made of leather. The leather will allow the officer to polish the finish to a high-gloss shine. Most of the preferred boots and quarter boots are a combination of nylon and leather. The leather, like that in the shoes, can take a shine. Some shoes are made of a glossy material, called clarino, that always appeared freshly shined. These are ideal for dress uniform situations.
Durability is very important. The types of weather and terrain shoes are exposed to are very hard on the footwear. It is important the materials and construction are high quality. Police officers demand their equipment be able to stand up to the rigors of their job. The last thing officers want is to have a piece of equipment that has to be routinely replaced.
Lastly, cost does play a role when an officer is selecting what to put on his or her feet. The shoes must be of appropriate quality for the price offered. Police officers are notoriously underpaid so value is important. Most officers will not mind spending $100-$125 for shoes that will last at least 1-1 ½ years. They would be willing to pay more if the footwear lasts longer.
The shoes an officer selects are an integral part of his or her uniform. There is much thought put into the footwear that is applicable to the environment the officer works in.
