Modern Day Water Resistant Boots Started as Rubber Galoshes

by Tactical Boot Store

Waterproof BootThe Egyptians were the first group to make waterproof boots using liquid rubber instead of using animal hides. Pouring liquid rubber over fabrics became a popular waterproofing technique in some parts of the world while other cultures used linseed oil to coat animal skins to keep the feet dry.

Charles Goodyear was the first American to use the rubber plant in footwear and rubber footwear became the perfect solution to keep the feet dry especially when shoes and boots were made using the vulcanization process he patented in 1844. Vulcanizing tempers the qualities of rubber so it can be molded into different shoe shapes that are durable and waterproof. The old term Galoshes was used to describe rubber footwear that was pulled over leather shoes or boot to make them waterproof.

Waterproof boots and shoes were made of rubber until the Abington Shoe Company, better known as Timberland, developed the first guaranteed waterproof boot in 1973. Timberland used a nubuck side leather treated with a special waterproof chemical from Prime Tanning Co. Timberland stitched the pieces of the leather upper together and sealed the seams with a waterproof chemical. The company attached the sole to the upper using a vulcanizing process and the modern day leather waterproof boot was born. Today waterproof boots are made in different leathers and styles. Modern waterproof boots do what the ancients strived to do; they keep the feet dry.
