Work boots were pretty basic before Hi-Tec Sports introduced Magnum Boots in the early 1980s. The old work boot had four standard styles. There was a moc-toe style and a plain toe style and both were available in a 6” or 8” shaft. The work boot was made with a leather or synthetic upper on a rubber lug sole. Some work boots has leather linings while other brands made unlined versions to hit a specific price point.
Anyone who needed a boot for construction work or for other casual activities was trapped as far as styling and materials were concerned. Comfort was not even addressed in the work boot until the athletic shoe became fashionable in the early 1970s.
Waterproof leather work boots were unheard of before the early 1970s and the styling teetered on verge of boring as well as the mundane. Hi-Tec recognized a void in the work shoe market as well as in the tactical market so they developed the first athletic inspired tactical boot in 1982. The FBI training facility in Virginia immediately fell in love with them. The Hi-Tec Magnum boot was a hybrid of the work boot; some shoe experts described that first style as a running shoe on steroids.
Thanks to the success of the Hi-Tec Magnum, the Midnite and other leather Magnum boots were introduced. By 1992 there was a complete line of Magnum Boots. In 2002 a separate Magnum division was formed to handle the orders that were coming in from all over the world. Suddenly the work shoe had a face lift and even though the old work shoe is still popular today the Magnum reinvented it in a way that no one thought was possible.
