Police officers, paramedics, and firefighters must spend a great deal of time on their feet as part of the requirements of their high-intensity jobs. As a result, they need high-quality, comfortable duty boots that can stand up to punishment and shield their feet from impact and injury. The first recorded duty boots were military boots worn by Roman soldiers; known as caligae, they were primitive hobnail boots that slipped onto the feet and protected the legions during battles and on treks to and from the Roman wars. These early boots were not differentiated by which foot they were to be worn on; as a result, they were often very uncomfortable and could create blisters on the feet. During the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army wore ankle boots which were regularly switched to ensure even wear of the boots; this also ensured that the boots were constantly being stretched in different places and consistently rubbing the feet raw as a result. Nonetheless, these earliest duty boots were better than no boots at all, and were regarded as a significant advance over the typical shoes of the time.
Until the U.S. Civil War, similar problems with military duty boots created horrific conditions for soldiers; the introduction of right and left lasts that molded the boot to fit the correct shape of each foot made a tremendous difference in comfort and safety for soldiers in the field. Duty boots continued to improve throughout the first part of the 20th century, with the first modern combat boots being put into service in World War II. These boots were essentially a combination of the existing shoes with a smooth leather ankle protection attached and fastened with buckles; later enhancements included the lace-up boot with molded soles and canvas or leather uppers.
Today, duty boots are available in a wide range of materials, styles, and colors. Leather and nylon are the most popular materials for uppers, while advanced polymer and rubber soles offer exceptional traction for police officers, fire fighters, and other first responders. Tactical Boot Store carries a full line of duty boots suited for daily wear in a variety of working environments and climates, including fully insulated waterproof models and lightweight desert boots designed to keep feet cool in intensely hot weather. The wide range of duty boots available from Tactical Boot Store ensure that first responders are certain to find exactly the right boot for their particular working conditions.
